God Is More Important Than Money

Matthew 6:19-25

19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;

20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.

21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

22 “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light.

23 But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?

Jesus told us not to store treasures for ourselves here on earth. Why? Because moths and rust would destroy them, and thieves could break into our homes, and steal our possessions.

We need to store our treasures in heaven. The treasures in heaven cannot be destroyed by moths or rust. And thieves cannot break in and steal those treasures. Our hearts will be where our treasure is.

Jeremiah 17:9-10
9 “The heart is deceitful above all things,
And desperately wicked;
Who can know it?
10 I, the LORD, search the heart,
I test the mind,
Even to give every man according to his ways,
According to the fruit of his doings.

Our hearts often work in very deceitful and mysterious ways. Who can understand our hearts? There is nothing good therein. They are so deceitful and evil. Only God, can search our hearts and test our minds. He will do to each of us according to the way we live, and what we do.

We are constantly moving about, unable to be still before God. Our hearts and minds are always wandering away as we scroll through our handphones and TV screens continually throughout each day and night.

Our minds are constantly bombarded by fears, worries and distractions. We are easily stirred up, hurrying from one place to another, and then to another. We are afraid of missing and losing out. As we do so, it becomes very difficult for us to recognize His presence with us, and to hear His voice.

We are always chasing after some treasures. But when we got them, we want some more! Never enough!

We do not have quality and quiet time with God. He is not what our hearts are seeking. He is not our Treasure!

And God has not moved away from us. His truth has not changed.

Let us take a look at Jesus. He knew His heart, and where His Treasure was!

While on earth, Jesus was often ministering to the multitudes. Sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and even those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics were brought to Jesus. And He healed them.

Even though the crowds followed Him everywhere, demanding His time and attention, Jesus often stepped away to be alone with His Father.

Jesus frequently withdrew to lonely places and prayed. Let us think for a moment. If the Son of God needed to have regular quiet time with the Father, how much more do we need too?

Jesus healed the sick. He taught the people. He carried out the greatest mission in history. Yet, He never allowed the hustle and bustle of life and ministry to replace intimacy with God. Those noises, busy activities and fast movements around Him did not take away His peace and presence with His Father!

Before the miracles, after the crowds, and even during the most difficult moments of His life, Jesus returned to places of silence and prayer. Those private moments strengthened Him to face the public bravely in the midst of disputes, challenges and problems.

Jesus knew where His heart was! His Father was more than enough for Him! The eyes of Jesus were continually focused on His Father.

The eye is a light for the body. If our eyes are good, then our whole body will be full of light. But if our eyes are evil, then our whole body will be full of darkness. And if the only light we have is really darkness, then we have the worst kind of darkness.

We cannot be a slave to two masters. We will hate one master and love the other. Or we will follow one master and refuse to follow the other. So, we cannot serve God and money at the same time.

We cannot love God and money at the same time. And God is more important than money! He is more precious than gold and silver!

We don’t have to worry about the food we need to eat. And we don’t have to worry about the clothes we need to wear. Life is more important than food. And we are more important than acquiring better clothes.

If our hearts are still looking and seeking treasures elsewhere, we need to repent and return back to God. He knows exactly what to do with us.

Even if silence is all we could hear, we need to persevere as our hearts have been hardened and cold for a long while. We need to let His light break through our darkness! Let us hear His still small voice. Let us hear what He is saying! Then, we will begin to learn about our own hearts.

Truly, where our Treasure is, there our hearts will be also.
