Worshipping God For Who He Is

John 4:23-24
23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him.
24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

How do we worship God? Is our worship spiritual and true? Do we lean towards our own understanding, seeking our own secret desires or agendas? Or do we have the help of the Holy Spirit leading and guiding us as we worship God?

For God is Spirit, we need His help to worship Him as we should. The Father desires this kind of worship from us. He leads us as we worship Him. Even in worship, He is the Chief Musician and Leader.

Very often, we worship God to seek power and miracles for our life, answers for our prayers and petitions, or enormous prosperity and super health for ourselves. But we need to worship God for who He is, and not only for the miracles or gifts He would provide or the mighty deeds that He would do for us.

2 Corinthians 5:7
For we walk by faith, not by sight.

We know God by believing, and not by seeing. Thus, we need to worship Him the same way. By believing and not by seeing. We need to turn our eyes on Jesus, focusing on God, and not drawing attention towards ourselves.

True worship values God's character, love, and holiness above His physical or material blessings. Is our faith steadfast and strong? If we rely solely on miracles and on what we can see, our faith will be weak and fragile when tough times strike or unanswered prayers happen. That’s why we need to worship Him beyond seeking His power and miracles.

The aspiration of our faith is knowing God, and spiritual transformation to become more Christlike inwardly. It is not seeking dramatic and powerful events outwardly.

God can, and does perform miracles today. But seeking daily and outrageous miracles in our lives isn’t what God intends for us.

Though Jesus performed many miracles, He had something interesting to say about those who crave after signs and wonders:

Matthew 12:39-40
39 But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

An evil and faithless people will seek for signs and wonders. But Jesus said that He would be in the grave three days and three nights just as Jonah was in the stomach of the big fish for three days and three nights.

Jesus told us that even in His death, there was resurrection and life.

John 11:25
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.

Jesus is the resurrection and the life. We who believes in Christ will have life even if we die.

By demanding further signs and wonders to confirm our faith, we will be committing an evil and adulterous act. Like the pagans and atheists demanding God to do outrageous things to convince them, proving that He exists! We do not worship God to demand things from Him or to prove that He is mighty and powerful.

Today, many worship services have become very manipulative by using psychological, musical and environmental tactics to engineer and create specific emotional or spiritual responses.

Many churches are employing expensive production techniques to create artificial, emotional and disturbing vibes. Specific orchestrated elements are triggered by intentionally lifting or lowering the volumes and levels of the songs, pumping energy and adrenaline in worship services. These are done in order to create emotional outbursts and senses of awe.

The church environment is also specially designed so that the auditorium lights will be dimmed while keeping the stage brightly lit with immersive multi-effects systems and futuristic laser lights. Even smoke machines are used to generate heavenly effects.

Loud and resounding, clanging non-stop as if God cannot hear us. A concert-like atmosphere is created, drawing attention to the worship leaders, singers and musicians. And the worship is focused not on God, but on us!

Repetitive and lyrical loops are sung. By singing short and emotionally charged phrases repeatedly, a hypnotic trance-like state is induced, making the Christians more easily persuaded to the sermon or altar call subsequently.

Thus, we need to worship God in spirit and in truth. Worshipping Him because of who He is, and not what we feel or want to get.

By doing so, our faith and spiritual relationship with God will grow genuinely and deepen continually, lasting and enduring even in troubled times.

His amazing grace and mercy will be enough and sufficient to carry us through life, with or without signs and wonders.
