Becoming
Weary Of Our Daily Bread
Matthew 6:11
Give us this day our daily bread.
The Lord’s Prayer is the prayer that Jesus taught His disciples
how to pray. It is well known among Christians. The prayer is
recorded in Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4.
One important part of the prayer says, " Give us this day our daily
bread.”
Most obviously, this prayer to God earnestly requests that God would
sustain us daily. It was like God’s provision of manna, given every
day in the wilderness to the Israelites.
Exodus 13:21-22
21 And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud
to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them
light, so as to go by day and night.
22 He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day or the pillar of
fire by night from before the people.
Exodus 16:35
And the children of Israel ate manna forty years,
until they came to an inhabited land; they ate manna until they came
to the border of the land of Canaan.
But despite of God’s presence with His people by a pillar of
cloud by day and by a pillar of fire by night, and God’s faithful
and daily provision of manna to His people, the people of God got
weary of God’s presence and provision, they continually complained
and murmured against Him. They actually grew weary of God!
1 Corinthians 10:1-11
Old Testament Examples
1 Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our
fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea,
2 all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea,
3 all ate the same spiritual food,
4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that
spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.
5 But with most of them God was not well pleased,
for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.
6 Now these things became our examples, to the
intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also
lusted.
7 And do not become idolaters as were some of them. As it is
written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to
play.”
8 Nor let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in
one day twenty-three thousand fell;
9 nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were
destroyed by serpents;
10 nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed
by the destroyer.
11 Now all these things happened to them as examples, and
they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of
the ages have come.
Even in the midst of God’s presence and provisions, the people
got weary spiritually! What happened to the Israelites in the
wilderness are now lessons for us to avoid committing the same
errors as them.
They were all under the cloud, and they all went through the sea.
They were all baptized as followers of Moses in the cloud and in the
sea. They all ate the same spiritual food. And they all drank the
same spiritual drink.
They drank from that spiritual Rock that was with them. That Rock
was Christ. But God was not pleased with most of them. They died in
the desert.
Truly, familiarity breeds contempt. The people of God had been
familiar with God's daily presence, provisions and protection. They
knew very well what was going to happen daily. And they began to
lose respect for God and His leader, Moses. The awesomeness and
greatness of God no longer thrilled them. And they took God for
granted. They became weary of all His daily presence, provisions and
protection. And they sought for other gods!
And all these things that happened are examples for us. They should
stop us from wanting evil things as those people did. We should not
worship idols, as some of them did. It is written in the Scriptures:
“The people sat down to eat and drink. Then they got up and had wild
parties.”
We should not take part in sexual sins, as some of them did. In one
day, 23,000 of them died because of their sins. We should not test
the Lord as some of them did. They were killed by snakes. And we
should not complain as some of them did. They were killed by the
angel that was sent to destroy them.
The things that happened to the Israelites are examples for us not
to follow. And they were written down to warn us who live in the
last days.
Our daily bread is our sustenance and support from God who sustains
us from day to day. Becoming tired of it means growing weary in
waiting for God's presence and provision.
What can we do to prevent spiritual weariness?
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
16 Rejoice always,
17 pray without ceasing,
18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in
Christ Jesus for you.
We should have a heart of joy and gratitude, thanking God for our
life, reminding us that we will be nothing and have nothing without
Him. We need to pray continually, not falling into lusts and
temptations.
Isaiah 40:28-31
28 Have you not known?
Have you not heard?
The everlasting God, the LORD,
The Creator of the ends of the earth,
Neither faints nor is weary.
His understanding is unsearchable.
29 He gives power to the weak,
And to those who have no might He increases strength.
30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary,
And the young men shall utterly fall,
31 But those who wait on the LORD
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.
We need to have patience, persistence and perseverance as we
continue to wait in faith upon the Lord. We need to never let go of
our hope and trust in God's promise to provide strength to the
weary.
In doing so, we will continue to enjoy God’s presence and provision
every new day.
And we will not grow weary of our daily bread and God.
