Another Jesus, A Different Spirit And A Different Gospel

2 Corinthians 11:4
For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted—you may well put up with it!

About 2000 years ago, the apostle Paul warned Christians about preachers who would come in a different spirit preaching another Jesus, and sharing a different gospel. Why did he need to warn the believers there and then? Is it still relevant for us today? How can we know whether someone is preaching another Jesus?

True biblical preaching contains the message of repentance, and also the message of the kingdom of God. A true preacher of the biblical gospel will preach on the repentance of sins, and announce the coming of the kingdom of God.

Jesus is both the Lord and the King! He is the Lord who saves us, and also the King who reigns and rules over us!

Ezekiel 36:26-28
26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.
27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them.
28 Then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; you shall be My people, and I will be your God.

The kingdom of God has three essential attributes.

  • There is a King named Jesus.
  • The kingdom has laws to keep it working in order.
  • The citizens of the kingdom will obey their King and His laws.

The kingdom of God has only one King! No other name but the name of Jesus! Not elected by earthly selections or choices. It is not about people trying to build this and that! Or people declaring and decreeing this and that to come to pass! Or false apostles and prophets trying to make supernatural things happen!

The kingdom of God is eternal! Not shakeable by any election results, world events, catastrophes, wars or natural disasters!

God will put His Holy Spirit within His people so that they will obey His laws, walk in them and do them. They will be His people, and He will be their God!

Today, we have many people trying to build the kingdom of God without knowing the King and His laws! Many just do what they feel like doing according to their own desires and spirits! They are simply lawless, doing what is right in their own eyes!

Some preachers preach that homosexuals are condemned to perish forever in hell but are themselves committing the sins of fornication and adultery. Some preachers preach against abortions, and promote preserving the lives of unborn babies but are militant and okay in killing people who do not agree with them or share the same worldviews. All these wrongdoings are sins before God.

James 2:10-11
10 For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.
11 For He who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery, but you do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.

No sin is above other sins. All sins are wrong in the eyes of God! While some sins may seem to be more serious according to our measurements, all sins ultimately separate us from God.

No sin is more or less serious than another in the sight of God. Even seemingly small sins can have the same consequences as larger ones!

Little sins, if unrepented, can hinder spiritual growth, damage our relationships with God and others, and erode our own conscience. If not addressing them as soon as possible, and continually ignoring them, little sins can worsen very fast and grow uncontrollably, leading potentially to more significant problems later on.

These false prophets and preachers are of a different spirit! They are not okay on some sins but okay on other sins! And they do their own things according to their spirits!

But Jesus does not do His own will! Our Lord does not do things on His own without the Father. Likewise, the Spirit does not do things on His own without the Father!

John 5:19
Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.

John 16:13-14
13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.

Many preachers are elevating and exalting the Holy Spirit above the Father and the Son. This is not biblical! God is One, existing in three co-equal and co-eternal Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

While the Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in God's work and is essential for Christians to live a holy life before God, there is no biblical or theological basis for placing the Spirit above the Father or the Son.

James 1:16-17
16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.
17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

Some preachers preach that we can simply go to the Spirit directly, asking for this and that. For anointing, for spiritual gifts or powers, for material blessings, wellness and wealth! They teach that all these be done by bypassing the Father and the Son! But this is totally presumptuous and not biblical!

1 John 4:1
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

As many false prophets have gone out into the world, we are exhorted not to believe every spirit, but test the spirits!

1 John 4:5-6
5 They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, and the world hears them.
6 We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

As they have a different spirit, these false prophets and apostles will speak as of the world, and the world hears them. As they are worldly, they will promote the things of the world - the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life! We need to know and discern the spirit of truth and the spirit of error!

Acts 17:11
These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.

We need to test all things and spirits, and hold fast what is good. While we are eager and excited to hear and learn the things of God, we must also study the Scriptures ourselves every day to find out if those things are true.

2 Timothy 2:15
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

We need to be diligent, doing our utmost best to become the kind of person that God will approve! We need to give ourselves wholeheartedly to Him. We should diligently study God’s Word to understand His truth, and then use His truth to discern all kinds of spirits that come our way! Like a worker who is not ashamed of his work, we need to use the true teachings in the right way.

In doing so, we will then be able to worship Him in spirit and in truth! Yes, in the right spirit and truthfully before God!

Psalm 51:10-12 KJV
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
11 Cast me not away from Thy presence; and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation; and uphold me with Thy free Spirit.

Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. May this be our prayer too!
