An Angel Of Light

2 Corinthians 11:13-15
13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ.
14 And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.
15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.

Satan is not an angel of light. He only transforms or masquerades himself as an angel of light. In simpler words, he disguises himself as an angel of light. He looks like one but is not!

In disguise as an angel of light, he may appear to be benevolent or righteous but is not. He has hidden agendas and evil intentions. Through his deceitful disguise, he is able to deceive and mislead people easily like he first deceived Eve in the Garden of Eden.

Light and darkness are metaphors for good and evil. If he is an angel of light, people will naturally deem him to be a good being.

Light is created on the first day (Genesis 1). In the beginning, God created the sky and the earth. The earth was empty, and had no form. Darkness covered the ocean, and the Spirit of God was moving over the water.

Then God said, “Let there be light!” And there was light. God saw that the light was good. So He divided the light from the darkness. God named the light “day” and the darkness “night.” Evening passed, and morning came. This was the first day.

God divided the light from the darkness. And God exhorts us to live in His light.

1 John 1:5-7
5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.
7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

God is light. In Him, there is no darkness at all. So if we say that we are walking and living with God, but we continue to live in darkness, then we are liars. We do not follow the truth.

God is in the light. We should live in the light too. If we live in the light, we then can have true Christian fellowship with each other. And when we live in the light, the blood of the death of Jesus, God’s Son, is making us clean from every sin.

Like all living things and plants, human beings are drawn to light! When Satan disguises himself as an angel of light, we will easily be deceived if we see him only through our own natural eyes and feelings. He wants us to think that he is really good, truthful, loving and powerful just like God is.

He would not come in the form of a dark and devilish being with scary horns and red eyes. That kind of portrayal would turn away people as most people are drawn not to darkness, but to light. Therefore, Satan cunningly appears as an angel of light to draw us to himself and his deceptive lies.

Likewise, His workers are not true apostles. They are workers who lie. And they change themselves to look like apostles of Christ. This does not surprise us as Satan changes himself to look like an angel of light. The servants of Satan also make themselves to look like servants who do what is righteous and good. But their deeds are evil and dark! In the end, they will be punished for the wicked things they do.

2 Corinthians 11:3-4
3 But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
4 For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted—you may well put up with it!

Just in the same way that Eve was deceived by the snake's clever lies, our minds too can be corrupted easily if we abandon our full and pure devotion to Christ! We can also gladly accept anyone who comes to us but preaches a different Jesus, not the Christ the Bible teaches! We can also receive a spirit and a gospel completely different from the Spirit and the gospel of Jesus Christ! A different Jesus, a different spirit and a different gospel!

How can we discern the deceptions of Satan as he disguises as an angel of light?

In Matthew 4, Satan tried to deceive Jesus by tempting Him thrice in the wilderness. How did our Lord overcome those three temptations? Jesus overcame by the Word of God!

Psalm 119:105
Your word is a lamp to my feet
And a light to my path.

The Word of God has great power. It can speak and bring spiritual light into our hearts. By knowing Him, His Word and His voice, we will be able to discern what is true light and what is counterfeit.

Satan will present sin as something pleasing and beautiful to be desired. His workers and leaders are often charismatic, looking good, and speaking very smoothly and elegantly! They are able to attract big crowds and audiences by their seductive messages and great promises! These false apostles and prophets initially seem to be trustworthy but later their manipulative behaviors will be revealed, and their secret evil agendas will be exposed. They will become very rich by transferring big portions of the offerings and monetary collections into their own bank accounts!

Their dark and disturbing messages will lead people away from God. Their false teachings appear to be enlightening and life-changing. But they will soon lead people into lawlessness and ungodliness! They are teaching people that it is okay not to obey the commandments of God! They are lawless in the sight of God!

People who chase after destiny, wealth, health, prosperity and power will be easily deceived by these false teachers, prophets and apostles as they seek to satisfy their lust of the flesh, their lust of the eyes and their pride of life!

1 John 2:15-21
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.
17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

Deceptions of the Last Hour
18 Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour.
19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.
20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things.
21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and that no lie is of the truth.

If we have the true light and life of Jesus in us, we will not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. These are the evil things in the world: lusting for the things to please our sinful selves, lusting for the sinful things we see, and lusting to be proud of the things we possess. But none of those things comes from the Father. All of them come from the world.

The world is passing away. And everything that people want in the world is passing away. But the person who does what God desires lives forever.

The end is near! The Antichrist is coming. And now many antichrists or enemies of Christ are already here. So we know that the end is near.

Those enemies of Christ were initially among us. But they left us. They did not really belong with us. If they were really part of us, then they would have stayed with us. But they left. This shows that none of them really belonged with us. And they are now drawing believers away from us!

But true believers have been anointed by the Holy One. This anointing is the Holy Spirit which God has given us. The Holy Spirit will teach us and enable us to discern what is true and what is not! He will also empower us with spiritual graces and strengths to overcome our own weaknesses and temptations.

May we draw near to God daily, knowing Him, His voice and His Word!

May we also become strong in His Spirit so that in our own weakness, we become strong in Him, and be enabled to resist the temptations of the one who comes in the disguise of an angel of light!

Remember Eve in the Garden of Eden! And also remember Jesus in the wilderness!

By His Word and His Holy Spirit, we can overcome!
