What Is His Son's Name?

The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, his utterance.
This man declared to Ithiel--to Ithiel and Ucal:
Surely I am more stupid than any man,
And do not have the understanding of a man.
I neither learned wisdom
Nor have knowledge of the Holy One.
Who has ascended into heaven, or descended?
Who has gathered the wind in His fists?
Who has bound the waters in a garment?
Who has established all the ends of the earth?
What is His name, and what is His Son's name, if you know?
Every word of God is pure;
He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him.
Do not add to His words,
Lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar. (Proverbs 30:1-6)

In the first few verses of Proverbs 30, the prophet Agur shared a prophecy that would change the destiny of the Jewish people and the nations of the world. It will bring salvation, love, joy and peace to the earth!

The name "Agur" was derived from the Hebrew root word "agar" (OT 103), which means to harvest. Agur was the son of Jakeh, and Jakeh means obedience. This son of obedience was to gather and harvest many souls into the kingdom of God, especially the Jews!

Before he shared the prophecy, Agur said, " I am tired out, O God, and ready to die. I am too stupid even to call myself a human being! I cannot understand man, let alone God."

What made him said so? What drove him to the point of thinking that he was the most stupid person on earth? He must have come to realize how little he knew about man, and how much lesser he knew about God! And how could God Almighty have a Son?

This could be blasphemy! And this was precisely the main reason why they crucified Jesus!

And the high priest arose and said to Him,
"Do You answer nothing?
What is it these men testify against You?"
But Jesus kept silent.
And the high priest answered and said to Him,
"I put You under oath by the living God:
Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!"
Jesus said to him,
"It is as you said.
Nevertheless, I say to you,
hereafter you will see the Son of Man
sitting at the right hand of the Power,
and coming on the clouds of heaven."
Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying,
"He has spoken blasphemy!
What further need do we have of witnesses?
Look, now you have heard His blasphemy!
What do you think?"
They answered and said,
"He is deserving of death." (Matthew 26:62-66)

As this revelation might amount to blasphemy in the eyes of the religious leaders, God amazingly chose to reveal the truth to Agur as the prophet asked those intriguing series of questions.

  • Who has ascended into heaven, or descended?

  • Who has gathered the wind in His fists?

  • Who has bound the waters in a garment?

  • Who has established all the ends of the earth?

  • What is His name?

  • What is His Son's name, if you know?

Agur was an Israelite, and he knew very well the great declaration "Shema Israel" in Deuteronomy 6:4, "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one!" He also knew the great commandment, "You shall have no other gods before Me." (Exodus 20:3). If this is so, how could it be that God Almighty has a Son? It was impossible! But God revealed the secret to this holy prophet.

Surely the Lord GOD does nothing,
Unless He reveals His secret
to His servants the prophets. (Amos 3:7)

And God revealed this awesome secret personally - Himself. Not by any angels.

When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi,
He asked His disciples, saying,
"Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?"
So they said, "Some say John the Baptist,
some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."
He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"
Simon Peter answered and said,
"You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
Jesus answered and said to him,
"Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah,
for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you,
but My Father who is in heaven." (Matthew 16:13-17)

God didn't reveal this breathtaking secret to Agur only. He also revealed it to King David and the prophet Isaiah. One witness is not good enough. But by the mouth of two or three witnesses, every word shall be established (Deut. 19:15, Matthew 18:16, 2 Cor 13:1).

In Psalm 2, David made mention and declared that God truly has a Son:

I will declare the decree:
The LORD has said to Me,
'You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.
Ask of Me, and I will give You
The nations for Your inheritance,
And the ends of the earth for Your possession'. (Psalm 2:7-8)

And the word of the LORD came to Isaiah, and the prophet declared,

For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)

And not only that, God also Himself declared this secret to the prophet Nathan who then told King David this prophetic word:

And it shall be, when your days are fulfilled,
when you must go to be with your fathers,
that I will set up your seed after you,
who will be of your sons;
and I will establish his kingdom.
He shall build Me a house,
and I will establish his throne forever.
I will be his Father, and he shall be My son;
and I will not take My mercy away from him,
as I took it from him who was before you.
And I will establish him in My house
and in My kingdom forever;
and his throne shall be established forever. (1 Chronicles 17:11-14)

This unfathomable prophecy may first seem to apply to Solomon, the beloved son of King David. But upon further examination and investigation, with the eternal scope and perspective in view, the everlasting kingdom of this Son stretched far beyond that of Solomon! There is another Son of David whose kingdom lasts forever! He is the Son of God! The Son of Man and the Son of God!

And this Son of God is not an angel or created being. He is the Only Begotten Son of God. Period.

For to which of the angels did He ever say:
"You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You"?
And again:
"I will be to Him a Father,
And He shall be to Me a Son"? (Hebrews 1:5)

This really blew the mind of the wise prophet, Agur! He was not only surprised and awed by this revelation, he was totally confused. If God has a Son, then God must have another name? "I AM"?? "God" (Elohim)?? "LORD" (Jehovah)?? "Lord" (Adonai)?? What is His name? What is His Son's name? If anyone out there knows the answers, please tell me. What is the name of the Father? What is the name of His Son? And this requires the wisdom of God!

Amazingly, God, in His wisdom, grace and love, had planted His name in the mouths of babes! What is His name? It is nothing less than "Papa" or "Father." The word "father" in Hebrew is ab. It occurs more than 500 times in the Old Testament! But none of the Old Testament writers ever addressed God as ab (or Abba in Aramaic).

However, God did drop the hint, speaking of Himself as Israel's Father:

Do you thus deal with the LORD,
O foolish and unwise people?
Is He not your Father, who bought you?
Has He not made you and established you? (Deut 32:6)

"But I said: 'How can I put you among the children
And give you a pleasant land,
A beautiful heritage of the hosts of nations?' "
And I said: 'You shall call Me, "My Father,"
And not turn away from Me.' " (Jeremiah 3:19)

When the Son of God came, He began to reveal the name of the Father. In teaching His disciples how to pray, Jesus specifically told His disciples to address God Almighty as "Our Father Who art in heaven" (Matthew 6:9). This is commonly known as "The Lord's Prayer."

Jesus always prayed, addressing God as Father. One great example is the prayer found in John 17. It is the longest prayer recorded in the New Testament. It was offered on the night before Jesus was betrayed and arrested! In the stillness and quietness of the cruel night, Jesus expressed His love for His disciples, and commended them to the care of God the Father!

Jesus spoke these words,
lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said:
"Father, the hour has come.
Glorify Your Son,
that Your Son also may glorify You,
as You have given Him authority over all flesh,
that He should give eternal life
to as many as You have given Him.
And this is eternal life,
that they may know You, the only true God,
and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
I have glorified You on the earth.
I have finished the work
which You have given Me to do.
And now, O Father,
glorify Me together with Yourself,
with the glory which I had with You before the world was.

"I have manifested Your name to the men
whom You have given Me out of the world.
They were Yours, You gave them to Me,
and they have kept Your word.
Now they have known that all things
which You have given Me are from You.
For I have given to them the words
which You have given Me;
and they have received them,
and have known surely that I came forth from You;
and they have believed that You sent Me.

I pray for them. I do not pray for the world
but for those whom You have given Me,
for they are Yours.
And all Mine are Yours,
and Yours are Mine, and I am glorified in them.
Now I am no longer in the world,
but these are in the world,
and I come to You.

Holy Father, keep through Your name
those whom You have given Me,
that they may be one as We are.
While I was with them in the world,
I kept them in Your name.
Those whom You gave Me I have kept;
and none of them is lost except the son of perdition,
that the Scripture might be fulfilled.

But now I come to You,
and these things I speak in the world,
that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves.
I have given them Your word;
and the world has hated them
because they are not of the world,
just as I am not of the world.

I do not pray that You should take them out of the world,
but that You should keep them from the evil one.
They are not of the world,
just as I am not of the world.
Sanctify them by Your truth.
Your word is truth.
As You sent Me into the world,
I also have sent them into the world.
And for their sakes I sanctify Myself,
that they also may be sanctified by the truth.

"I do not pray for these alone,
but also for those who will believe in Me through their word;
that they all may be one,
as You, Father, are in Me,
and I in You;
that they also may be one in Us,
that the world may believe that You sent Me.

And the glory which You gave Me
I have given them,
that they may be one just as We are one:
I in them, and You in Me;
that they may be made perfect in one,
and that the world may know that You have sent Me,
and have loved them as You have loved Me.

Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me
may be with Me where I am,
that they may behold My glory
which You have given Me;
for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.

O righteous Father!
The world has not known You,
but I have known You;
and these have known that You sent Me.
And I have declared to them Your name,
and will declare it,
that the love with which You loved Me
may be in them, and I in them." (John 17)

In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed:

And He said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible for You.
Take this cup away from Me;
nevertheless, not what I will,
but what You will." (Mark 14:36)

The word "father" is "pater" in Greek, and interestingly, it occurs 500 times in the New Testament, almost the same number of times in the Old Testament, making reference to our Heavenly Father as well as human fathers. Although nobody in the Old Testament would ever address God as "Abba," the Christians in the New Testament did. This most intimate name of God is not revealed by flesh or blood! It is revealed by His Holy Spirit.

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God,
these are sons of God.
For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear,
but you received the Spirit of adoption
by whom
we cry out, "Abba, Father."
The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit
that we are children of God,
and if children, then heirs--
heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ,
if indeed we suffer with Him,
that we may also be glorified together. (Romans 8:14-17)

And because you are sons,
God has sent forth
the Spirit of His Son into your hearts,
crying out, "Abba, Father!"
Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son,
and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. (Galatians 4:6-7)

This is the main difference between our Christian faith and other faiths. We have a Father in heaven. He is God Almighty! The gods of other religions are far away, and have no close relationships with their believers. But we have a special relationship with our God. He is our Father, and we are His children! We have become heirs of God through Christ!

God must have revealed His special name to Agur. Abba Father! What an awesome revelation and truth! This prompted the prophet Agur to press on and ask, "What is the name of His Son?"

God did sent the answer about 300 years later to a prophet named Isaiah.

Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign:
Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son,
and shall call His name Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14)

For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of His government and peace
There will be no end,
Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,
To order it and establish it with judgment and justice
From that time forward, even forever.
The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this. (Isaiah 9:6-7)

The zeal of God did perform and accomplish it! These ancient prophecies were fulfilled! When the appointed time finally arrived, God sent His angel Gabriel to a humble carpenter, Joseph, who was engaged to a virgin girl named Mary. Both of them were descendants of King David. Gabriel told Joseph to go ahead and marry Mary even though she was pregnant. For the Child conceived in her was of the Holy Spirit.

And she will bring forth a Son,
and you shall call His name JESUS,
for He will save His people from their sins. (Matthew 1:21)

The Son of God is called Jesus! The Name above all names.

Therefore God also has highly exalted Him
and given Him the name which is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
of those in heaven, and of those on earth,
and of those under the earth,
and that every tongue should confess that
Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11)

This Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah of Israel. The people of Israel are still waiting for their Messiah! They have yet to acknowledge Jesus as their Christ! Before this can take place, the Jews must first acknowledge God as their Abba Father. When they do so, they will have no more problems in acknowledging that God has a Son since they too are the sons of God! They will then accept Jesus as the Son of God! If the people in the Middle East do the same, love, love and peace will flow in the region. Ancient brotherhoods will be restored! The sons of Abraham will be reunited again as forgiveness and peace reign on earth!

Agur had asked the questions about the name of God and the name of His Son long ago, and I am not sure whether he got all the answers. Thanks to God that He has revealed to us His name and His Son's name by His Holy Spirit. Let's not take His name in vain. A name that is so unspeakably magnificent and wonderful that it has exhausted any spoken or written language. Even the angels are awed by His name! They have to bow down and worship Him! Worshipping Jesus, the Son of God!
